When God Makes You New: Five Ways to Cooperate with the Holy Spirit
God’s power to make us new is one of the greatest gifts of the Christian life. Jesus described it to Nicodemus as being “born again”—receiving life from above that only the Holy Spirit can give. But this “made-new” work does not end when we first believe. The Spirit continues renewing our minds, desires, relationships, and direction so that we increasingly reflect Jesus.
Sometimes spiritual dryness or frustration is not evidence that God has left us. It may be an invitation to notice where we are resisting His work. John 3 reveals five common faithful responses to challenges with the “New You” that help us cooperate with the Holy Spirit.
1. Receive What Disrupts Your Old Categories
Nicodemus recognized Jesus as a teacher from God, but Jesus immediately led him beyond what he already understood: “No one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.” Nicodemus tried to fit this truth into an old framework, just as we sometimes reject God’s answers because they feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable.
2. Surrender What Effort Cannot Transform
Jesus said, “Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit.” Discipline can improve habits and effort can change appearances, but neither can create the life of Christ within us. Many sincere people become exhausted because they are trying harder without surrendering deeper.
3. Notice the Spirit’s Quiet Work
Jesus compared the Spirit to the wind. We cannot see the wind itself, but we can recognize its effects. In the same way, renewal often begins below the surface: an old appetite weakens, pride softens, forgiveness becomes possible, or fear begins learning trust.
4. Let Questions Lead You Toward Jesus
Nicodemus asked, “How can this be?” Honest questions can move us closer to Jesus, but questions can also become a shield against obedience. Faith does not require us to understand every detail before taking the next faithful step.
5. Bring Your Life into the Light
John 3 begins at night and moves into Jesus’ teaching about light and darkness. We may ask God for renewal while protecting the habit, wound, attitude, or secret He wants to address. Jesus does not bring us into the light to humiliate us. He exposes sin so it can be forgiven, wounds so they can be healed, and falsehood so it can be surrendered.
Your Made-New Challenge This Week
Read John 3 slowly. Then ask God, “Am I resisting Your made-new work in my life?” Wait honestly. Write down what comes to mind, compare it with Scripture and the character of Jesus, and choose one act of surrender and one act of obedience. Then begin walking out the new thing the Spirit is showing you.
Difference makers the” new you” is the difference making world economy. How do we help people in this world?
